| Organization Overview |
: |
Kechara Soup Kitchen is a community action group born in 2006 to distribute food to the homeless and urban poor. Inspired by His Eminence Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, who personally experienced homelessness and hunger in his youth, this group seeks to find long term solutions to ease the sufferings of many.
We currently distribute food twice a week in the urban areas of KL, focusing on Chow Kit, Pudu, Petaling Street areas. Please join us! |
|
| Mission |
: |
The aim of the organisation is to contribute towards improving the society of Malaysia in the scope of feeding the homeless and urban poor and to help those who wish to re-enter society. |
|
| Objectives |
: |
* In the short term, to provide sustenance and basic medical care for the homeless and urban poor in Kuala Lumpur.
* In the medium term, to provide a permanent SOUP KITCHEN building as a place of safety, “off street”, for the distribution of hot food and medical treatment facilities for the homeless, whilst continuing to provide street food delivery to those who are unable to come to the centre.
* In the long term, to reduce the flow of homeless living on the streets by providing a NURTURE CENTRE building as a place of training and assistance to help make the homeless employable and for them to re-enter society. |

| History
|
: |
Kechara Soup Kitchen is inspired by His Eminence Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, the Spiritual Advisor to Kechara House.
As a young child, Tsem Rinpoche was often hungry and after years of physical and emotional abuse, he ran away from home when he was 15 years old. He made a harrowing journey across the United States, from New Jersey to Los Angeles. Cold, alone and with no money. Since this experience, Rinpoche has always donated food to the poor and encouraged others to do the same.
A group of Rinpoche's students decided to start distributing food in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. Being mindful and respectful of others' beliefs, KSK is strictly non-religious and does not discriminate in terms of race or culture. Our food is always halal for this reason also.
As this group grew, we began to realise that we had to be more structured in order to be more efficient. Therefore, a working core committee of volunteers was formed, which organises allocation of volunteers for KSK's routes, the packing of food etc.
On August 11th 2008, KSK had its first AGM as a registered society and a new committee has been elected. |
